Freedom Poems for National Poetry Day

Posted by Speakeasy News > Tuesday 26 September 2017 > Celebrate

This year's UK National Poetry Day is on 28 September. A great opportunity to get some poetry into your class, and to explore this year's theme: Freedom.

The National Poetry Day site shows the amazing variety of experiences that simple word can evoke, from "Invictus", the poem that inspired Nelson Mandela in prison, to Edward Thomas' First World War poem "Liberty",  to a "17 Caterpillars", about children spilling a jar of caterpillars they had collected and surmising on the fate of the one that escaped.

To spread a bit of poetic fancy and start a conversation, there are quote cards to print out and share, as well as a free eBook and many written and spoken examples of poems. We've made a selection of ones for use in class in our Poetry Day Webpicks.
