At 94, Clint Eastwood returns with Juror No. 2, a legal thriller that could mark the end of his prolific career. This 40th film explores the moral dilemmas of a juror who discovers his possible involvement in a crime. The limited release of the film in the United States (about fifty theaters and minimal promotion) contrasts with its more enthusiastic reception in Europe, where Eastwood remains an icon of American cinema. This decision reflects a degree of caution on the part of the studio, possibly due to the unenthusiastic box-office performances of Eastwood’s recent films.

A Rich and Varied Career
Clint Eastwood's career is one of the longest and most influential in film history. Initially an actor in the 1950s, he became famous with the television series Rawhide, before conquering the big screen through Sergio Leone’s spaghetti westerns in the 1960s, notably with the Dollars trilogy (including A Fistful of Dollars and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly). His "Man with No Name" character became emblematic, laying the foundation for the stoic, tough anti-hero that would define the rest of his career.

In the 1970s, Eastwood continued to forge his tough-guy image with roles like Inspector Harry Callahan in the Dirty Harry film series. This cynical and uncompromising police officer symbolized a period of questioning authority and traditional values in the United States. Eastwood portrayed this type of hero with intensity, while also beginning to distance himself from these archetypes through his directing.

Transition to Directing
In 1971, Eastwood stepped behind the camera with Play Misty for Me, a psychological thriller that explores themes of obsession and danger, foreshadowing his future choices of dark, introspective films. This first film launched a prolific directing career marked by a wide variety of genres and styles, always focusing on complex characters and moral dilemmas.

Among his most notable films is Unforgiven (1992), a gritty western that deconstructs the cowboy myth and won him four Oscars, including Best Director and Best Picture. This film is often considered one of the greatest westerns of all time and marked the beginning of international critical recognition for Eastwood as a director. In 2004, he won another series of Oscars with Million Dollar Baby, which explores the complex relationship between an aging boxing coach and a determined young female boxer.

A Persistent Artistic Vision
Over the decades, Eastwood has developed a unique identity as a director, often going against Hollywood trends. With films like Mystic River, Gran Torino, American Sniper, and Sully, he explores recurring themes such as redemption, violence, patriotism, and moral conflict. His characters, often tortured and vulnerable, reflect a clear-eyed and uncompromising view of the human condition.

Juror No. 2 continues in this vein: the film centres on a juror caught in a crisis of conscience. The choice to highlight a character grappling with inner dilemmas recalls other Eastwoodian heroes—men and women confronted with their own flaws.

"Twelve good men (and women) and true."

A Final Act?
With Juror No. 2, Eastwood reaches the milestone of 40 films as director. Although he has long passed the traditional retirement age, this tireless director continues to show complete dedication to his art. His body of work is marked by a constant desire to question and analyse human beings in their contradictions and internal struggles. Even though this film could mark the end of his career, a recent photo of Eastwood reading new scripts suggests he might not be ready to retire just yet.

Nicolas Hoult plays Justin Kemp, who realises when called for jury service in a murder trial that he may have a connection to the case.

This is a possible addition to Shine Bright AMC File 15 Justice for all? about the U.S. justice system and 12 Angry Men, one of the films studied in LLCER.
