What’s Coming in Sci-Fi and Fantasy movies?
From July to September, the world of English-language entertainment will be filled with imagination, wonder and a few long-awaited returns. Summer 2025 offers a rich selection of new sci-fi and fantasy releases — both on the big screen and on streaming platforms — with stories that explore identity, power, friendship, and the future of humanity. Whether the mood is epic, poetic, adventurous or gently humorous, there’s something for everyone looking to escape into another world.
1 - One of the biggest events of the season is the return of Superman. In this new version directed by James Gunn, the legendary hero is reimagined with a fresh, human perspective. It’s less about saving the world with brute force and more about navigating who we are and where we belong. The tone is emotional and sincere, and the storytelling aims to reconnect with Superman’s origins as a hopeful figure in uncertain times.
2 -Science fiction fans can enjoy Jurassic World: Rebirth, the latest chapter in the dinosaur saga. While the spectacle remains, this new film takes a slightly different path, reflecting more deeply on the environmental and ethical questions raised by genetic experimentation and the illusion of control over nature.
3 - Another long-anticipated revival comes from Marvel, which brings the Fantastic Four into its cinematic universe at last. This new take on the superhero family blends vintage style with modern flair — cosmic adventures, sibling dynamics, a bit of science, and a lot of heart. It’s an opportunity to rediscover one of the most iconic teams in comic book history.
4 - In a more romantic and gothic register, Luc Besson’s Dracula: A Love Tale, starring Christoph Waltz, offers a stylised reinterpretation of the classic vampire myth, and Bram Stoker's novel. Shot in English, the film focuses on the eternal, tragic relationship between Dracula and Mina, set in a dreamlike Europe torn between passion and damnation. It promises visual elegance, literary echoes, and a timeless atmosphere — a different kind of fantasy, more intimate and poetic.
5 -For those drawn to darker, more literary fantasy, The Sandman returns to Netflix in July with a second season. Based on Neil Gaiman’s graphic novels, the series dives into dreams, death, desire and the strange spaces in between. Visually rich and linguistically bold, The Sandman offers a universe that blends mythology, surrealism and psychological depth.
5 -Another title with an epic feel is Foundation, continuing its ambitious adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s legendary sci-fi saga. Set across galaxies and centuries, the series explores how knowledge, faith and power shape the future — a story as vast as its visuals, with a tone both thoughtful and dramatic.
6 -If you're in the mood for something a bit different, Wednesday returns this August. The sharp-witted daughter of the Addams Family is back at Nevermore Academy, where her deadpan humour and outsider status make her the perfect guide to a world of mystery and gothic charm.
Look out for our A1 resource on the new series coming in late August, or check out the A2 resource on series 1.
7 -Coming just after is Eyes of Wakanda, an animated series set in the Black Panther universe. Each episode tells a stand-alone story connected to Wakanda’s history, combining action, culture and style in a format that’s fresh and inventive.
8- And finally, in September, Xeno offers something gentler: the story of a lost alien who finds friendship and shelter on Earth. The tone is warm and playful, with echoes of E.T. and Lilo & Stitch, exploring what it means to be different — and to be welcomed.
