The This is England short-film festival in Rouen has a specific programme of short films for cycle 3 classes. This year’s selection focuses on children's experiences, some as young carers, and stories from diverse cultures represented in the U.K.
If you sign up for a Cycle 3 showing, your students will see six films ranging in length from 3 to 13 minutes. Three are animations, and three are live-action fiction stories.
You can make reservations for school groups and download the teaching packs for jeune public, collège and lycée on the schools site.
You can see the six titles in the Cycle 3 selection here and access a downloadable teaching pack for each. There is also a presentation to help pupils anticipate about the films before seeing them.
Two of the films focus on young carers, both made by directors with personal experience:
The Golden Boy 15m46
The Golden Boy explores the relationship between Michael, a non-verbal autistic six-year-old boy and his much older sister. It features scenes in primary school which would be a different way of looking at British school. In this short behind-the-scenes video, director Elizabeth Peace talks about on her own experience helping care for her brother, and the young actor with autism who portrays Michael.
Tidy House 12m48
On a camping trip in Wales, an eight-year-old girl, Becca, witnesses the emotional breakdown of her father, who is divorced from her mother. She starts the process of parentification, the role reversal when a child becomes a carer to their parent.
The three animated films draw on diverse cultures represented in the UK:
And Granny Would Dance 9m48
Marmar listens to the stories told by her Iranian grandmother’s friends as they play a game of cards. Based on childhood memories and shared stories.
Himal 3m46
This short with no dialogue is about yetis – the legendary abominable snowmen of the Himalayas. A father yeti is terrified of humans and wants his son to keep away from them. But his son makes friends with a human girl. Will he be able to change his father’s mind?
The Man Who Loved Flowers 3m18
Director Sonu Thomas points out that many men only receive flowers at their funeral. This is true in her South Indian community but also many other. Her short animation looks at the life of a South Indian man whose love for flowers goes unnoticed.
Lotus 9m12
Frankie, 13, watches a local bike crew from her balcony on a housing estate and suddenly longs to experience the freedom of riding. The only problem is she has never had a bike, or learned to ride.
