Sixteen teams are lining up in Switzerland for the UEFA Women's Euros from 2 to 27 July.
UEFA European Women's Championship in 1991 grew out of competitions in women's football that had started in 1982. The tournament adopted its current 16-team format in 1997.
The first round has four groups who play "round robin": the four teams in a group play each other and the two with the best results move on to the quarter finals.
Host nation Switzerland is hoping to duplicate the success of the hosts in 1997 (the Netherlands) and 2022 (England), who each won the competition. Although that may be difficult for the Alpine nation, which has only participated twice before, in 1997 and 2022, and was knocked out in the group round each time.
Lionesses
The England team, the Lionesses, would love to hold onto their title. Spain, which beat England in the last World Cup final, is on excellent form. And Germany, who were runners-up in 2022 and have won the Euros six times, can never be discounted.
Two teams are making their debut in Switzerland: Poland and Wales. Wales is drawn in the same group as it's English neighbour as well as high-performing France and the Netherlands

The tournament will kick off on 2 July with Iceland v. Finland and the host nation playing Norway.
